The winter transfer season is here and clubs from all over the world are plotting their next moves heading towards the second half of the season and the next summer transfer window. It is during this period where clubs need to look to strengthen themselves to either prevent relegation or to improve their current position on the log by adding a new x factor.

With that said, this is the second transfer window which has been influenced by the Corona Virus pandemic and the affects it has on the movement of players, the financial stability of clubs and more. Nevertheless, football clubs, agents and scouts need to work around the regulations and affects of the virus and keep the football world running.

This winter window has already seen some action regarding transfers/agreements made and the spreading of rumours/potential transfers which may take place. This article will only look at 5 of the transfers/rumours which have been brought to light in the last few weeks. These are Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Dele Ali, Chrisitan Eriksen and Mesut Özil.

Lionel Messi

The Argentinian superstar had a dramatic summer transfer window period in 2020 where he was denied an exit by Barcelona, thereby forcing him to stay at the club until his contract expired. Luckily for Messi, his contract expires next summer (2021) which is why transfer rumours have now surfaced and clubs who are interested will be in contact with Messi’ agent for the next few months. A recent rumour linked the playmaker to Paris Saint Germain which could potentially set up a deadly attacking force with Neymar, Mbappe and Messi. Under Mauricio’s guidance and tactics, this could perhaps be the necessary jump which can get PSG a Champions League trophy. There were also rumours last summer that the Argentine might have moved to Manchester City, however, this did not go through. This could still be an option depending on the plans of Pep Guardiola and the approval of The Citizen’s upper management.

Erling Haaland

Chelsea experienced a difficult December in 2020 after losing 3, drawing 1 and winning 1 Premier League matches and this has placed pressure on Frank Lampard to get his team back to winning ways. The Blue’s officials have expressed their interest in Erling Haaland and are willing to buy the player out from his contract at Borussia Dortmund. The club’s management clearly believes that Erling is going to be a great asset to their side and will provide them a good return on their investment. The German club will not be in a hurry to get rid of their superstar, especially now with Jordan Sancho’s dip in form. It will be interesting to see how this plays out and whether Chelsea can produce the right figures to tempt Dortmund into a transfer. In addition, is it the right time for Erling to move to the Premier League and is Chelsea the perfect fit for the youngster? We have seen how Timo Werner has struggled to find form at Chelsea which is surprising as the German had a very successful run at RB Leipzig. These are questions Erling needs to take into consideration when pondering about a potential move.

Dele Alli

With the recent appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as head coach at PSG, many rumours have gone around revolving the former Tottenham Hotspur coach poaching some of his old players. One player which has been mentioned is Dele Alli. The 24 year old played a key role in Mauricio’s plans for Tottenham and was a regular starter for the London club. Dele has been known to be a hot head who has had problems with teammates before which could lead to some PSG players not feeling to onboard with him joining the team. In addition, egos might clash which is why Mauricio needs to be certain of his decision if the rumours have some truth in them. Could a potential move to PSG help Dele grow and develop and will he play a key role at PSG as he did at Spurs? We will have to see…

Christian Eriksen

The Danish playmaker is set on making move from Inter Milan after not enough game time and not reaching his full potential at the Italian club. A recent rumour which has moved around is that the former Tottenham Spur player wishes to make a return to the Premier League, however, not to his previous club but to Arsenal FC. A swap deal with Arsenal may take place which can lead Eriksen back to the Premier League and assist a struggling Arsenal side. Eriksen’s move to Inter Milan was not successful and resulted in an excellent player’s talents not being used to its full potential. He now wishes to make a move away from the Italian club to get his career back on track and be the creative, impactful playmaker he was during his time at Tottenham Hotspur.

Mesut Özil

The German World Cup winner has finally made a move from Arsenal to Turkish side Fenerbahçe S.K. He now looks forward to finally start playing football again after having very little game time at Arsenal the past year. Mesut Özil will seek to be the assister of many goals, help his new team reach the highest position it can and develop the other members in the squad. The German footballer has experience a difficult few years recently facing racism and discrimination as well as being heavily attacked for a social media post which did not sit right with many. These experiences have affected his career greatly and he now wishes to move forward and begin a new start in Turkey.
